IMAP synchronizes mailbox folders with the server and is usually the best choice when you use more than one device. POP typically downloads messages and may remove server copies depending on its settings.
Steps
- Choose IMAP for a phone and computer that should see the same Inbox, Sent, and other folders.
- Before changing an existing POP account, export or back up locally stored messages.
- Add the new IMAP connection and confirm the messages you need are present.
- Keep the old local archive until you have verified the migration and understand how deletion synchronizes.
Good to know
Deleting a message through IMAP can delete it on other connected devices. POP messages previously downloaded to one computer may not exist in webmail. Do not remove the old mail profile until those messages are safely preserved.
