Protect a website directory with a login Print

Directory password protection can restrict a staging site or a folder of private content when the hosting configuration supports it.

Steps

  1. Open Password Protected Directories or the equivalent protection action in File Manager.
  2. Select only the directory you want to restrict.
  3. Create a distinct username and strong password for authorized visitors, then save.
  4. Test the folder from a private browser window and verify that an unauthenticated visitor is asked to sign in.

Good to know

Keep the directory on HTTPS. Do not use the main hosting password for visitors. Some applications, scheduled callbacks, and certificate-validation paths may stop working if you protect the wrong directory; check those before enabling the restriction.
